The Zooplankton Study is carried out at night in the laboratory using fresh zooplankton samples caught an hour earlier using a 500 micron mesh zooplankton net. Students meet in the laboratory after dinner and a zooplankton specialist gives an introduction to the zooplankton of the coastal waters of this region. Students are given the opportunity to assist in the zooplankton collecting process. For this study the students work in pairs using a low power binocular, dissecting microscope. Species are identified with the aid of identification guides and help from the zooplankton specialist. Students observe both preserved and living specimens under the microscope. Each pair records relative frequency of the various zooplankton groups and sketches one chosen specimen. They then try to record the Phylum, Class, Order and Family of the chosen specimen.
